Not with their smartphone platform, but with their infotainment platform.īlackBerry's QNX operating system powers somewhere in the neighborhood of 60% of vehicle infotainment systems. Now, as we close out 2015 and look to 2016, it looks like BlackBerry may miss the boat for a third time. In 2011, and in a move to regain waning popularity, BlackBerry announced BBX (now known as BB10.) BB10 was the follow-on to the wildly popular BB OS7 and was intended to be an apps platform like the now very successful iPhone and various Android devices.īut the developers didn't come and what developers BB10 had were leaving to port their apps to to the iPhone and Android phones where the money was. This was a huge problem for BlackBerry as clearly, people love apps. But back in 2008, Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) opened its platform to third party developers and all hell broke lose.īy as early as Jan 2009, Apple's App Store already had 15,000 apps with a total of 500,000 downloads.
